Book overload! I shopped hard.

I did indeed shop hard. And it was 20% off day at Half-Price Books. Here's what I got:

  • Dianetics, by L. Ron Hubbard (because I wanna know what the hell the John Travolta and Tom Cruise are studying)
  • Three of the "introducing" books. They're short, graphic novely books on various philosophers. I got the ones on Derrida, Sartre, and one on Romanticism.
  • Great Short Works of Willa Cather because we were talking about "The Sculptor's Funeral" in class last night and I was intrigued.
  • The End of the Affair, by Graham Greene (it's Donnie Darko's fault)
  • Collected Essays of Graham Greene (there are some goodies in there)
  • The Shipping News, by Annie Proulx, because I'm in love with her stories and it won a Pulitzer.
  • Film Theory: An Introduction, by Robert Stam to replace my undergrad film book that I sold. I need it to write a paper on Donnie Darko.
  • The Great Women Cartoonists, by Trina Robbins. Graphic novel about graphic artistis! Woop! Looks really interesting

I love boooks!

I'm going to read Cane, by Jean Toomer. Trying to get ahead on school reading.

  2. I hope you enjoy The End of the Affair. It is a rather unusual, but powerful, love story.

  5. Quill,
I've read limited Graham Greene, but from what I have read, love him. I think I'll enjoy it muchly.

Steph, go girl! I didn't think to look for erotica. Good erotica is so hard to come by (no pun intended).

  6. Yum, ecletic! Sounds like interesting stuff. I read one Graham Greene in school...and I think I liked him! I tried the Shipping News but I think it was one of those times of life when I couldn't get into it. I've been planning to try it again.

  7. I have high hopes for Graham Greene since I got hold of The Destructors. Loved that short story.

I'm hoping I'll dig The Shipping News. The stories in Close Range are reallyyyy good.

  8. I didn't end up going today. I decided to catch up on some sleep instead.

Have you seen the movie The SHipping News? I'm thinking about renting it.

  9. Haven't seen that movie. The previews looked good, though!

Did I mention asking you to write a review of Crash for the zine? Would you? We have one for Capote and I'm gonna do Walk the Line and Brokeback, so if we have Crash that'll be a good Oscar section.

  10. Excuse me, Miss Graduate Student... Isn't 20% off less of a deal than 50% off? Think about that as you get Jaked over the weekend.

BTW--L. Ron Hubbard was raised in Helena. Can I send you a picture of his boyhood home?

  11. Os, ummm, yes. If they'd had a 50% off sale I would've taken advantage but it was TWENTY. ;)

Please do send me a pic of the fucknut's childhood home. I've read 3 chapters and he's totally cracked.

  12. Andi,

I've read The Quiet American and The End of the Affair. I liked them both. I own a couple more by Greene :).

After you read TEOTA .. rent the film with Julianne Moore and Ralph Fiennes. Great adaptation. Saw the film before reading the book.

If you read L.Ron Hubbard, are you going to jump on couches?

  13. Suzz, I'm glad to hear more good things about Greene! I'll certainly rent The End of the Affair. I knew there was a movie but I didn't know who was in it. I'm allll about Ralph Fiennes!

I've read 3 chapters and while I don't have any urge to jump on couches, I did get the distinct feeling that I wanted to throw the book. :D
