Books books books and Estella

Went to the bookstore yesterday to gather all the texts for the Fall class: Problems in Adolescent Literature. I always have good intentions of getting things online or from the used bookstore (because the campus bookstore is a just big slew of academic money rapists), but it never seems to work out that way. I, like so many others, am had by convenience and location, location, location.

Whatever. I still got a bunch of books.

The reading list for Fall:

The Book Thief (Zusak) - already owned
Disturbing the Universe (Trites) - already owned, already read
Feed (Anderson)
The Giver (Lowry) - already owned, already read
Monster (Myers)
Planet of Junior Brown (Hamilton)
Push (Sapphire)
Shadows of Ghaddames (Stolz)
Song of the Magdalene (Napoli) - already owned
Speak (Anderson)
Tangerine (Bloor)
Welcome to the Ark (Tolan)

For fun, because I didn't take the August mini over comics:

The complete Watchmen collection (Moore)
Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth (author slips my mind)
A Robert Crumb collection

In other bookish news:

Nicky had the fantabulous idea to start an Estella's Revenge book club. Lemme know if you're interested, think it's a good idea or whatnot! I'm EXCITED about the prospects!

Listening: "Chocolate"...Snow Patrol (The Last Kiss Soundtrack!)...go find it! It's good! It's on The Last Kiss MySpace page. Click HERE and go listen!

  1. I dont see Hustler in any of those stacks?

  2. I prefer Perfect 10, thankyouverymuch.

  3. Are you talking about problems of adolescents as represented in literature, problems with the genre of adolescent literature, or problems with books that are over twelve years old?

  4. Totally interested in ER bookclub!! That would be WAY cool!

The books all sound good. I need to get The Book Thief back, I had to take it back unfinished. Heard it was a tearjerker.

I loved The Giver, read it in high school. Heard Speak is good too.

  5. I read The Giver a couple of years back for school, and it was qute good, but not as good as Gathering Blue, the only other Lowry book I've read. Cliched and cheesy, yes, but good nevertheless. Out of interest, what kind of problems in adolescent lit. are you looking at?

An Estella bookclub sounds like a fantabulous idea!

  6. I'm actually listening to Snow Patrol's Chocolate right now. How weird is that?
I'm not a huge fan of theirs, but have been listening to the two albums of their's that I own since this morning.

Also an ER book group sounds like fun

  7. X, I have no clue. Haven't taken the class yet. ;)

Heatheroo, can't wait to start The Book Thief. In fact, I should probably go ahead and start it so maybe it'll pop me out of this slump! And I read The Giver a few years ago, and while it was entertaining enough, I didn't love it. Looking forward to this class since Thesis Director included it in her dissertation.

GG, I'm not sure what the problems are going to be, actually. I'll keep y'all updated. Haven't read The Gathering Blue, but I've heard good things!

Fence, I've never really listened to Snow Patrol, but since they're on The Last Kiss soundtrack, I've been introduced. I like Chocolate very much. Addictive song.

  8. Glad you all like the idea of an ER book group. I'll keep you posted!

  9. I think you already know how much I loved The Book Thief. Is Speak the one with the gal peeking through leaves, by Laurie Halse Anderson? I'm pretty sure that was a 5/5 book, IMHO, also.

Bookclub? Another book club? Can any of us resist another freakin' book club? Not likely. If you're in charge, it'll be fun; that's about all I can say.

  10. OMG - you had to mention a book group. You know I'm addicted :) All I can say is I'll try.

By the way, so sorry about your fender bender yesterday. Sucks. Glad nothing major came of it.

  11. Nancy, I believe it's the same Speak you're talking about. Glad to hear it's good. I'm looking forward to reading everything in that class. And I'm glad to hear we have one more excited party re: the book group!

Yay BookGirl! It would be wonderful to have you along with us. And thanks...I'm glad the fender bender wasn't any worse. It shook me up a good bit, but I'll survive. My dog, on the other hand, was pissed.

  12. Ooh, I'm intrigued by the title of 'The Book Thief' alone, so I'm off to check it out on Amazon.

I'd definitely be interested in an ER bookclub!

  13. Bellan's been after me to read Watchmen, but I haven't done it yet. Lemme know how it is if you read it soon.

A book club? Hmm, I could be interested...

  14. Did I hear someone say "Book Club?" Sounds great, Andi!

I'm anxious to read The Book Thief and Speak, too. Keep hearing great things about both books.

Sorry to hear about your fender-bender. Those Texas drivers! ;)

  15. Lesley, glad to hear you're interested in our lil book club endeavor, and I think you'll be intrigued by the Book Thief blurb. Everyone I know that's read it really enjoyed it!

Heather, I'll keep you posted on the book club goings-on. As for Watchmen, it's such a pretty book. I wanna read it soon, and I hope I have the time.

LOL, Les! All our ears perk up when book club is mentioned I think. I know mine do! And I'll keep you updated on the massive reading list for class. I think there are going to be quite a few gems in there.

  16. Feed is a cool book. I had several students read it last year and they really got into it.

    Did someone say book club?

  17. Lulu, we certainly did say book club!! Trying to get one together for Estella's Revenge. I'll keep everyone posted.

Thanks for taking the time to comment! Blogger has been a beast lately, so I hope you do not have any troubles leaving your thoughts.
