Decision, made!

Talked to Thesis Director this morning, and we both agreed that it would be wise to extend the thesis to summer. She did the same thing when she got her M.A., so she was all for it. I still expect that I can have the majority of the work done by May, and the less I have to do during the summer, the better.

In other news, Shut Up and Sing, the Dixie Chicks' documentary is out TODAY! I will be grabbing a copy of it as soon as I get my taxes done at 11:00. Then I shall proceed to the public library with my laptopto watch it while grading papers until time to teach at the jc at 2:30.

And I sent the review of American Born Chinese (below) to the publisher and author's agent. Got responses from both this morning thanking me for the lovely review.

Lengthy, introspective post about writing coming later in the day.

  1. Good. I'm glad you are going to have plenty of time to get it done and get it done well. Not that I have any doubts. I know I've told you before how great a writer you are. Which reminds me...are you ever going to finish that story???

  5. Heather, thanky! I'm glad I have a bit more time now. I can actually breathe now without feeling as if I'd like to die a quick, decisive death.

    Fem, amen.

    Claire, thanks!

Funky, awww, that's the best compliment I've had all day! Thanky!

  6. By the way, Heather, I still fiddle with the story, but there's a shift that's gonna require a HUUUUGE re-write. So, gotta wait for the thesis to end first.

  7. It's much better for you to take the time, rather than having a heart attack over a short deadline. I think I'm postponing my bar exam (supposed to be next week, but I'm not ready). Even though no one agrees, I know I'm doing the right thing.

Love reading about your thesis--it brings me back to my academic days. I spend lots of time wondering if I should have gone for an MA or PhD rather than law school.

    Congratulations on your review!

  9. Right on, Purl. Do what you think is right re: the bar exam. And oddly enough I wonder if I should've gone to law school instead of getting this M.A.!

    Cold, I think it does!

  10. I have my taxes done. HA! But the MA/MS? Not even started. Of course, for as much good as the BS is doing me, I should have dropped out of high school.

Congrats on the "almost there" thesis. I'm so proud of you!

  11. I'm so jealous. I miss being in school. I'm sure that if I were in school I'd just complain about it the whole time, but ya know. You want what you can't have I suppose.

  12. Thanks, Samalama!!! And I can proudly say that now I have my taxes done, too! Hefty refund this year. Too bad it'll be going straight to my credit card bill.

  13. Nik, sooo true. I'd gladly trade my schoolness with you right now. I'm sooo tired and sick of it. Just wanna work a "real job" (teaching community college) and read fun books.

  14. Good for you! Congrats on making this decision as it sounds like it was the right one. Now go read a fun book - I think you deserve that at least :)

  15. Hurrah! I extended my mfa manuscript into the summer and had absolutely no regrets about doing so. Now I have to catch up on everything else that's been happening with you...

  16. Sounds like a good plan. I don't think you will be sorry for the decision you are making. Are you still think about ISU for a phD?

  17. Are you planning on teaching? I am trying to make a transition from corporate to teaching (I have an MFA) -- any resources you recommend would be so appreciated. http://litkitten.blogspot.com

P.S. Gotta see the Dixie Chicks DVD!!!

  18. Thanks, Iliana! I think I will! Now what to read?

Thanks, Courtney! The more people I hear say they extended and felt good about it, the better I feel! :)

Stephanie, I am still considering ISU. Just waiting for to hear something. Wish they'd hurry up!

LK, I actually left you a comment about that. I don't have much advice to give except to say that an MFA would probably get you a position teaching writing somewhere! Good news, yes?
