Well....

I GOT THE JOBBB!!!!!!!!! Whew! Finally, a permanent, full-time faculty member at a college I LOVE. And I may be the new Writing Center director. Just depends. I'll find out soon. :D
I was shocked and amazed that the vice president told me before I left the interview that the position is mine. So happy. So so happy. I'm so much LIGHTER because I don't have to worry about whether or not there will be enough courses to teach, etc. Health insurance, retirement benefits. YAY!
And I have time to read again since the semester is over. I have about 15 pages of The Sorrows of an American left, and it's about damn time that I be finished. It's a good book, there just haven't been enough hours in the day to finish it.
In other news, B. and I are off to the mountains for a well-deserved (on both our parts) vacation next week. We'll be gone from Monday to Friday with no Internet (on purpose). You can bet I'll be relaxing, swimming, seeing what's to see in Maggie Valley, NC, and READING. I'm not sure exactly what I'll take yet, but my first inclination is The Omnivore's Dilemma and A Great and Terrible Beauty. YA and non-fic sound like the perfect fixes for my current reading mood.
And I have TWO Bibliobuffet columns to finish, so I should really be going. However, I will be back with more bookish banter tonight or tomorrow.
Thank you all so much for the crossed fingers (and toes). It paid off!

  3. Yippee!!! Couldn't happen to a nicer person!! I'm going to miss you while you're gone, though. :-( I'll try to remember to get you the mango/jalapeno stir-fry recipe so you have something fun to come back to.

Enjoy your vacation! You earned it!

  6. Sweet news!! Congratulations, Professor Andi!! As far as vacation goes, I'm completely and insanely jealous! But I have 4 whole days off myself, starting today. Of course, we are heading to the streets of Chicago. Not exactly down time!

  11. Congratulations, Andi. That's great news.

And enjoy Maggie Valley. I grew up there, and if Ghost Town is still operational, it's worth the admission price just for the view . . . and a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway and hike up to Devils' Courthouse is a great way to spend the day. I'm jealous.

  13. This is wonderful news, Andi! It's doubly wonderful because a friend of mine who recently found out she was being laid off also was offered a really good job.

I hope you have a good rest of the week and enjoy your time away!

  14. YAY!!!! Congratulations! That is super-exciting for you. It sounds like this is a different college than the one you are at now? That's great that they liked you right away. Will your commute be any shorter?

Have fun on your vacation! I'm looking forward to a trip to colorado at the end of June. Must. Have. Day. Off.

  17. I thought you'd appreciate this Mary Oliver poem about her dog, Percy. Probably applies to Daisy!

I Ask Percy How I Should Live My Life
    -- by Mary Oliver

    Love, love, love, says Percy.
And run as fast as you can
along the shining beach, or the rubble, or the dust.

    Then, go to sleep.
Give up your body heat, your beating heart.
    Then, trust.

  21. Hey! Congratulations! That's great!

Enjoy your vacation, too. Definitely take "The Omnivore's Dilemma." Good, good stuff.

And as I am also heading off for a nice vacation in Indianapolis, I suppose I can get by for a week of no new Andi posts. :) My books for the trip are Eclipse (for like the fifth time), The Road by Cormac McCarthy, and a book about American expatriate writers on the Left Bank in Paris after WWII. Yay!

  23. CONGRATULATIONS!! I know that is a load off your shoulders. Community Colleges are often notorious for not hiring very many full-time faculty and relying on part-time so they don't have to pay for benefits. Enjoy your vacation!

  32. Congratulations, Andi! A permanent job is so wonderful to have - it was 12 years for me between permanent jobs - I had temp work and term work in the government - when I finally won my competition and was made permanent, it was such a relief! sick days! holidays! insurance...so I'm really thrilled for you too. Have a great holiday and reading time, and then come back and tell us about this Writing centre directors thing, since all of us who write are very interested!!!
