Introducing...Greyson!

Greyson Eris arrived by c-section at 1:50, Saturday, April 17th. Most of you, if you follow me on Twitter or Facebook already know this, but just trying to keep everyone in the loop. Here's how it went:

We got to the hospital around 10:00 on Friday, the 16th, and they dosed me up with Cytotech to get things rolling. Cytotech = one long cramp. Not fun. The nurses kept popping in every 20 minutes to reposition the fetal heart monitor because Greyson likes to move. It was a nearly-sleepless night.

6:00am on Saturday they moved me down to labor and delivery and hooked me back up to that damn heart monitor. Ultimately, I was very glad it was there, but it was SO HARD to keep still. I would've much rather been up and moving--sitting, pacing, dealing with pain--not strapped to a very uncomfortable table. They started my Pitocin to induce labor around 8:00, and that's when the real crampy, contractiony fun began. In reality, the Cytotech to ripen the cervix was far worse than the Pitocin. I couldn't even feel the regular contractions because the cramping was so constant.

It was really a very uneventful labor. By noon I'd only progressed to 1/2 a centimeter, and the contractions were coming about every three minutes. The clincher was that Greyson's heart rate took a dive after each contraction. Seeing as I was only 1/2 cm along, it was WAYYY too early for him to be that stressed out. My body and the baby were throwing on the brakes, so my doctor called it a c-section and Greyson joined us shortly after.
Only a few minutes old -- looking a little puffy but very alert!
Still in the hospital, still alert, looking dashing in a stretchy hat.
Chilling with Dad. He found his favorite chest sleeping position very quickly.

This was just yesterday after our first doctor's appointment. Greyson is looking totally sleepy and over it all.

He is an adorable, sweet baby, and a little angel. We're having some trouble breastfeeding and it's thrown me into more than my share of tears the last few days, but we'll see how that all irons out in the long run. We're soooo blessed to have this little boy in our lives, and I'm loving motherhood so far.

  1. Aw, he's so cute! Congrats!

And yeah, breastfeeding doesn't just come naturally. It took us a few weeks to perfect it.

  4. Congratulations! He is absolutely beautiful :) And just because I know how it goes..I want to say that I nursed two of my kids and bottle fed one. There are all healthy beautiful children so don't put any pressure on yourself either way. Enjoy being a Mommy :)

  5. He's adorable Andi! So happy to see this post.

Breastfeeding isn't the cakewalk people suggest- "He latched right on and ate like a champ"- HAHA! I'm a fan, but the first few weeks sucked with boy my kids.

  6. Your labor sounds very much like my first. It was miserable. They kept me strapped down and we ended up with a c-section after 3 hours of pushing.

Ditto what Samantha said. My eldest son was colicky and we were both unhappy with nursing. Finally, when he was about 3 weeks old, I begged my husband to fix up one of the formula samples and let me have a full night of sleep. After the midnight feeding, he slept for 6 straight hours. We switched to formula. But, then I breastfed my youngest with no problem. Don't feel guilty if you feel like you need to switch. He'll be fine, either way.

  11. Congratulations! He is beautiful!

Breastfeeding is a skill that takes a while to learn. I hope that things get easier soon. Everything seems so much harder when you are a tired new mum, but I promise that it all gets better quite quickly. Good luck!

  17. He is so so so cute! Those squinchy little newborn faces kill me. Others have already commented on this, I think. But breastfeeding is HARD. Now I am so happy we are, but it was no exaggeration the hardest thing I've ever done. You are busy busy and sleep deprived, but I wrote a post on it recently if you want to read.

  26. Greyson is just a cutie! Congratulations!

Don't worry about the breastfeeding. It was rough at first with my first child. Is there a breastfeeding consultant at your hospital who can help? There was one at mine and she really helped.

  27. Ohhh, he's lovely! Many many congratulations and take the very best care of you. You're the most important resource your little family's got now, so rest up, enjoy the baby and try not to fret about things. The early days hormones are powerful and will mess with your emotions a bit, not to mention adjusting to the whole becoming-a-mom thing! Get your man to do lots (I wish I'd made my mine do more at the start and not tried to be supermum!).

  51. He's a little doll, Andi! Congratulations to both you and Chuck.

Don't worry about the breastfeeding thing. I couldn't do it either. My son's now 6' 2" and lifts weights. Apparently, formula works!

lol ... plus it allows the Dad to be more involved in it all.

Sleep for you will happen; showers are a marvel!

  56. I saw the announcement on FB, but had to pop over here and add my congratulations again. What a beautiful little baby! And Bookfool said, "Your labor sounds very much like my first. It was miserable. They kept me strapped down and we ended up with a c-section after 3 hours of pushing." Umm, that could've been written by me, too! 3 hours of pushing AND an episiotomy followed by a c-section. But, of course, worth it all. :)

Looking forward to oodles of pictures in the coming months.

    Hope you're getting some sleep!!

  57. Wow, thanks for sharing these pics, and CONGRATS!!!

He is so adorable. Beautiful!! My husband says that in the last photo he looks like he is pondering the meaning of life -- or about to tell you what you have in your pockets ;)
