This is a perfect example of why Jim Tierney is my favorite illustrator. His covers are beautiful! This one is from the Penguin UK "Essentials" series. See more of the Essentials here and more of Tierney's covers here.
They do seem really willing to step out there and do something different. The "Ink" series remains my fave. I get so sick and tired of seeing the same lame covers -- feet on a beach, couple's back holding hands, closeup of YA eyes. BARF!
I bought Bridget Jones' Diary last year just because of the Tara McPherson cover, and even though I have a copy of From Russia With Love I am wanting to pick up the Ink version of that one.
I don't know that I would lick it, as I'm not sure it would taste very good BUT I would totally read it. ;P Penguin has really stepped up the cover effort in the last few years; they have some of the best!
Carl, the Bridget Jones cover is my favorite of that series! And I love Tara McPherson. I was first introduced to her via the Fables: 1001 Nights of Snowfall collection. OMG, so amazing!
Thanks for sharing your post, Carl! I love love love her stuff, and it was great to see more images from Lost Constellations. Chuck is currently taking a digital illustration class and he needs to emulate an artist's style right now. I showed him her stuff last night. Don't know yet if he's going to use it, but he definitely liked it!
I love this cover too! I like that it is brilliant and beautiful but still simple. I don't usually pay much attention to cover art, but maybe I should. There are some really clever and gifted illustrators out there!
That is pretty awesome. Love the design. Classy, not overdone, but not blah or boring in any way. Gives off a fun vibe.
ReplyDeleteA refined creamsickle. !!!! What's not to love? :)
ReplyDeletePenguin has done some really rockin' book covers recently. I'm impressed with their art department.

ReplyDeleteThat is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteOooooh, caramelicious!!! I love it.
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful, although I don't know that I'd go so far as to lick it.

ReplyDeleteBTW, I have The Bone People INK Edition. I didn't lick IT but I did hug it pretty fiercely. LOL
ReplyDeleteIt might taste like butterscotch.

ReplyDeleteKathy, I just love the color! And I'm a sucker for swirlies!
ReplyDeleteChris, exactly! Or butterscotch.
ReplyDeleteCome on, Jill, I know you have a little cover lickin' in ya. Be brave! I would NOT lick Freedom, however.
ReplyDeleteHeather, I think you and Jill are both braver than you give yourselves credit for. You're covers lickers deep down inside.
ReplyDeleteAnd yay for INK! I would hug those too.
Lee, you took the words right out of my fingers.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen her art books? They are both amazing. Here is my post on the last one (with pics). Well worth picking up:

One of MANY reasons that I fell in love with the movie Juno the first time I saw it was because of all the Tara McPherson posters in Juno's room.

ReplyDeleteWhoever he picks I would love to see the work he does!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! He's loving it so far. Will post some when he's done. :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, and I haven't even read one Evelyn Waugh book. Can we still be friends?
ReplyDeleteGreat, thanks soo much. Now I have another line of books to collect. I'm already obsessed with the hardcover Penguin classics. Now these! Gah!
ReplyDeleteThis is so much better than the edition I have!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great cover! I've seen the artist's work around but didn't know his name. I'm glad you shared this with us!
ReplyDeleteBellezza, don't feel bad, I haven't read Waugh either! I just really like the cover. :D
ReplyDeleteGrat cover. I also like all the other Essential covers. Stu, btw, is having a Waugh Wednesday feature on his blog. How fitting!
ReplyDeleteHis stuff is brilliant!
