The Sunday Salon - Happy New Year!!!

Happy New Year!!! I would've posted sooner, but I came down with strep throat on Friday!!! I spent the last two days in bed, wishing for a swift demise. Hopefully this is not a sign of things to come in 2012. The good news is, with the help of some serious antibiotics, I feel much better now.

Tis the season to be posting one's "resolutions" but everyone sucks at resolutions. Let's just be real shall we? So I'm not posting resolutions. I'm posting 2012 goals.

1. Don't impose too many rules on reading. That's right. It's the anti-goal. My main purpose in reading in 2012 should be to read deliberately. I shall not force myself to finish anything I hate. I will not accept review books or tour books I'm only lukewarm about. While I only read 30 books in 2011, it was an EXCELLENT reading year!

2. Make healthier choices--food choices, financial choices, motherhood choices. Just be a more balanced person in general.

3. Start a serious weight loss journey. I have a lot to lose, but I'm being realistic, accepting that it'll be a slow process, but I want to be healthier for my son and for myself. I'm taking a lot of inspiration from Amanda of Ramblings. It's been rewarding to witness her journey. If she can do it, I can do it, too!

4. Start seriously looking for a new job. As much as I love the one I have now, I have finally wrapped my head around the fact that it will go away this year. I have to find the next gig.

I've set some pretty straightforward goals for myself in 2012, and they're all extensions of things I've put in motion in 2011. Piece of cake, right?! We'll see. :)

As for reading, I'm about halfway through The Housekeeper and the Professor, and it'll most certainly be my first completed book of 2012. Watch for a review this week!!!

I hope you're all having a relaxing start to the new year. I see a good meal and time with Greyson in my plan today. Now that I'm back among the living, I can enjoy the first day of 2012.

What's your plan for the day? What are you reading to begin the year?

  2. Happy New Year, Andi! I'm right there with you about making healthier choices in every aspect of life. Good luck with your goals.

  3. I say the illness is something you're leaving behind in 2011 rather than a sign of stuff to come in 2012. :) You have the right attitude about so many of these goals, I think. I love that there are a handful of us who don't mind reading slower. I also love that you're willing to take your weight loss journey slowly. It's so hard when I see people who lose 100+ lbs in a year. But I know it's even harder for them as their bodies adjust to unrealistic lifetime levels of food, exercise, etc. Slow and steady is a great way to go. It takes forever - I've been at this for over two years now - but I'll get there, and I know I'll stay there when I do. You can too!

  4. I like your goals, especially the first. I am reading for pleasure this year too, and seriously limiting the amount of review books I accept.

    Good luck meeting your goals.

  5. Happy New Year! I'm kicking off 2012 with Jane Eyre, a book I've been meaning to read for a long time. Best of luck in meeting your goals this year :)

  7. I love reading over everyone's goals for this new year. I'm hoping to be healthier as well so I wish you lots of luck! As for books, my only goal is just to read. Simple as that :) I hope that you have a wonderful 2012!

  8. I'm sorry you've been feeling so miserable.

I love all of your goals. I want to lose weight too. If I lose a pound a week, I'll be at the halfway point of where I want to be by the end of the year (I am seriously overweight. My main goal is to lose 110. That's a long way to go).

I'll be here to cheer you on!

  10. Andi great goals! I think that all of us are inspired my Amanda (yay). I know I constantly ask her questions on twitter about exercise and what she's doing. Bottom line is writing down what I eat is what I need to do even though I HATE it. *le sigh* I'm glad to know that I have you and Allie to touch base with on this journey as well.

  11. Happy new year, Andi! I'm with you on making healthier choices (somehow, just paying for a gym membership makes me feel better, but I need to actually USE it, you know?) and hope you'll have a successful 2012.

  12. Happy New Year, Andi - I love your goals. And I agree about the tours and review books - I am being VERY selective in 2012...I have to!!!

  14. I refuse to call them resolutions, too!

I'm so glad the sickness is on it's way out...here's wishing you a healthier New Year!!

  15. Those seem like such reasonable goals. I haven't sat down and worked mine out yet, but they are perculating. I hope you have a great new year!

  16. These are fantastic goals, especially número uno! Best of luck in the new year!

  17. I like goals, but I'm trying to keep them simple this year!

Here are my Reading Resolutions for 2012.

  19. Right on, Natasha!

Amanda, I certainly hope I'm saying bye-bye to illness. :) Lord knows I'm around enough sick students and colleagues that a healthier diet and lifestyle would improve things. Slow and steady is the word for 2012!

Sam, I've just decided after all of these years blogging, it's stupid to restrict myself! Reading = happiness. :)

  20. Teacher/Learner, loooove Jane Eyre! I hope you do too and that the year is wonderful to you! :)

Thanks, Kathy! Strep is ridiculous and always knocks me flat on my butt. SO glad to be feeling better.

Samantha, amen to JUST READ!!! I hope to be doing much of that in 2012. lol

Allie, you and I are in the same boat. I could stand to lose 100-120. Let's do it!!!

    Right on, Chris! We can!

  21. Christina, writing down what I eat helps me a lot, too. I'm planning to get back into using SparkPeople.com to track my goals and progress. It helps keep weight loss a little more at the forefront of my thinking.

Thanks, Rebecca! Sadly I don't even have a decent gym where I live in the sticks, so I have a feeling I'll be taking advantage of lunch hours to do some light walking and jogging with heavier workouts on the weekend and during daylight savings time. Love a busy schedule that makes it hard to shoehorn extra activities in. lol

Selective is the word, Wendy! I get so many requests, I can only accept a fraction. Oy!

    Thank you, Emily!!!! :)

  22. Thanks, Jill! This time of year is hard on me. Our wonky weather in TX (30s one day, 70 the next) really jacks with my allergies and sends me into uber sickness this time of year. Hopefully a healthier diet and more exercise will help kick this trend.

Lisa, I'm sure I'll add some specifics as I go, but I wanted to be straightforward and concise! Big plans!

    Thanks, Rebecca!

    Yay for simple, Deb!

Thanks, Kathleen. Happy new year to you!

  23. Those look like very reasonable goals to me :-)

  24. I'm similarly moved by goals rather than resolutions. I want just enough of a challenge to inspire me to shoot for it, but not too much of a challenge to suck the joy out of my favorite hobby. No matter how many books I read in a year, I like to look back and be proud of what I read, so I'm focusing on only books I'm super excited about, as there are enough of those to keep me busy for YEARS. Happy 2012!

  25. Those are some great goals. Good luck!

  26. Ha! Totally agree that resolutions suck. ;) But these are all great goals. Above all good luck with the job search. I know that can be stressful but I hope all goes smoothly. Happy New Year Andi!
