Personally: The Great Move, 2012

Everyone lived to tell the tale of the Great Andi Move of 2012. It started 'round 7am on Saturday. Greyson and I took care of some last minute packing at my mom's house until the heavy lifting started at 11:00. Greyson escaped to Chuck's house so as not to be squished and the sweating process began.

Highlights:

  • It took exactly 1 hour to move all of the big furniture. This has to be a record AND testament to my "nomad" status of the last 10 years.
  • My mom missed all of the heavy lifting, but she ordered pizza to make up for it.
  • My friend Rachel helped with the moving, arranging, and staging and I'm so glad she came over!
  • My cousin Kevin also helped with the heavy lifting (not the arranging and staging), and it was great to see him, too!
  • I had Chuck and the Rockets and my mom over for a Father's Day lunch on Sunday. The crock pot baked ziti was blissfully good.
  • Once Greyson was back with me yesterday and everyone went home, I found myself completely overwhelmed by the really real idea that we live alone in our own place. Hello, culture shock.
  • Greyson's crib never arrived (I am not mentally ready for a toddler bed yet) so he spent another night at his Noo-noo's house. I passed out cold around 10:00.

Adding more pops of yellow to brighten it up.

Couch cover is on the way!

I strategically snipped out the remaining boxes. :D

A tired baby settles for a little "zone out" time with the portable DVD player.

There's still much of the furnishing and accessorizing to be done. The high speed Internet isn't working. And despite a valiant attempt yesterday, the yard still needs a good mowing. But overall we got the big stuff done and now it's just a process of settling into our routine in a new space. So simple but so enjoyable and scary all at the same time.

  2. It looks very cosy! And I am impressed that the heavy lifting only took an hour - next time I move, you will have to come and help me!

    1. Thanks, Katie! Moving does suck, but the start-from-scratch feeling is always a good time. Except when it's overwhelming. Have had a few of those days this past week, but we'll get into the groove.

  6. I agree with Katie that moving sucks but it is always worth it in the end. And decorating ideas are always exciting!!!! Good luck getting everything settled :)

  7. Congrats on your new home, Andi! You've already unpacked so much and it won't take long to settle in and make it your own place. Funny, my kiddo moved (again!) this past weekend, too. She wanted to have her own place after having roommates for years. I must have 2 pages of addresses for in my address book. (Yes, I'm a luddite and still own an address book. )

    Enjoy your new digs!

    1. Thanks, Les! The boxes leftover now are the ones full of junk I need to go through. I suspect it'll be the weekend before I tackle that pile of mess. I don't blame here for wanting her own space. I was never particularly fond of roomates -- preferring family (or boyfriends!). lol Hope she's enjoying her new place!

  8. So glad the move went well. I'm quite impressed with the 1 hour move time! While it is a bit of a pain, I enjoy moving because I get a clean slate. I love to decorate a new space!

    1. Thanks, Jenna! I was impressed with us, too! Shocked more like. The decorating is a great time. Can't wait until the next paycheck when I can do more of it. lol

  9. I get the "simple, enjoyable and scary all at the same time" - I'm right there with you. Haven't moved in eons so I'm really quite nervous about buying a new house. Your move time is quite impressive. Hope you love it like crazy!

    1. Nancy, the buying part would unseat me, but at least you've done that bit before!!! My mom and I were talking about how quickly a relatively empty house can fill up with stuff. I have soooo many empty closets at the moment, but I know that won't last. lol Makes for more work the next time around.

    1. Thanks, Lisa! The rooms are big in this house. It makes a relatively small space seem much more open and inviting. I hate feeling cramped and I have yet to feel that way in this house.

Biggest adjustment: hardwood floors. My carpet-spoiled feet HURT.

    1. Thank you, Jackie! Still swirling with a bit of anxiety since Greyson hasn't joined me for an overnight stay just yet. I've been waiting on his bed to arrive. Here's hoping he sleeps as well through the night in this new place as he has in our old one.

    1. LOL, thanks, Meg! He's growing like a weed. He cracks me up every day with his new words and expressions. And he's never shown a bit of interest in Shrek until this DVD player landed in his lap. No TV in the place yet (which doesn't bother me) but after a rambunctious day of daycare I do let him relax with some Super Why! in the evenings before bed. :)

  16. YAY!! I'm glad to hear everyone survived. The next time you move you should head a little south to Houston so we can hang out :)

don't even tell me about high speed internet. i just spent an hour plus with comcast trying to get my internet to work. i was ready to shoot myself. hope you have better luck than me when it comes to that.

    1. Thanks, Toothy! I do love Houston, but the traffic is enough to send me screaming! On the other hand, the banh mi in Vietnamese town is enough to make me want to stay.

My Internet continues to be a huge pain the ass. It goes out at least once per day. Urrrgh!
