TSS - Literary Viewing

Happy Sunday, y'all! It's been a very productive day here, which means less of the reading and more of the house cleaning. Urrgh! I also managed to fit in a lovely Mexican food lunch with my mom and some book shopping, and I'm now kicked back in the AC watching a Masterpiece Classic adaptation of Great Expectations. That's right, the one with Gillian Anderson as Miss Havisham.

Y'all know I'm a total Great Expectations nerd, and I've been salivating over this adaptation forever. But I couldn't find anywhere to watch it, UNTIL I noticed that it's on Netflix!!! Stream away, baby, stream away!

I also finished watching/listening to Masterpiece Theater's Northanger Abbey starring Felicity Jones, JJ Feild, and Carey Mulligan! I really liked this one, and it may be one of my fave Jane Austen adaptations.

It's too stinkin' hot in Texas to do ANYTHING outside, but I have to say, I'm more than pleased to stay indoors with my literary viewing.

Have you watched any great adaptations lately? Which is your fave? Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy or something more contemporary?

  1. AH! I love love love that Northanger Abbey adaptation so much that I wrote a paper on it in college. I remember watching it and thinking hmm both these actresses have something.

Definitely going to check out that Great Expectations one now that I know it's on Netflix! Have you seen the one with Helena Bonham Carter?

    1. Isn't it awesome! That's fantabulous that you wrote a paper on it in college!

I haven't seen the Helena Bonham Carter version. It's scheduled to come out here in October. Can't wait!

  2. I love that Great Expectations adaptation but my favorite Dicken's adaptation might be Bleak House. Little Dorrit was also very good.

    1. I need to read Bleak House and Little Dorrit. Those two remain uncharted territory.

  3. You are right - too hot to do anything outside! Wish I could say I've been spending a lot of time reading but here it is almost Sunday gone and I've done just chores. Boring. Must get some reading done now!

    1. I bet you got a lot done chore-wise, though! I got some done but not everything I needed to accomplish.

    1. Umm, it's ok. There are some differences that are bugging me. Visually, it's quite nice. Beautiful cinematography.

  5. My favourite would be the most recent Emma adaptation, the adaptation of Little Dorrit and the Colin Firth P&P.

    1. Oh gosh, I'm trying to remember the most recent Emma. I know I loved the Gwyneth Paltrow/Jeremy Northam version I watched growing up. Will have to check out Little Dorrit when I've read it, and of course I love Mr. Firth.

  6. I just watched that Great Expectations miniseries, too! It was very good. Was it close to the book? I have not read it yet.

  7. Ooh, I want to watch all of these things! What I did watch on Sunday night was Breaking Bad, whoo! There were a lot of references to Walt Whitman, that counts right?

I'm glad you're finding a way to beat the heat. YUCK :(

    1. LOL, that totally counts. Everyone is watching Breaking Bad but me!

  8. The heat in Mississippi sounds similar to the heat in Texas...it's too hot to even get in the pool...the water feels like a warm bath by mid-day :p We either get outside early or not until around 5 pm if we want to prevent melting ;)

    1. Yep, too dang hot. I hate that warm water pool thing. Like floating around in pee (because my mind is warped).

  9. I have watched that adaptation of Northanger Abbey so many times - it's a favorite! I also love the Bleak House miniseries w/ Gillian Anderson, the 2006 Jane Eyre miniseries, the Emma miniseries with Romola Garai, and the miniseries of Our Mutual Friend from back in the 1990's. And Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy, always. (Sorry Matthew Macfayden.)

  10. Hallo, again Ms. Andi!

Actually, to tell the truth, I have always wanted to read Edith Wharton's novels and then, watch the film adaptations! Gillian Anderson's version of *The House of Mirth* is one film I am keen on seeing! However, I didn't realise she had been in *Wuthering Heights* as well! I wonder if she shifted into adaptations!? I read a wicked review for *Age of Desire* which is a biographical fiction piece about Wharton. If your interested, I read it over on: Oh, for the Hook of a Book! I have this blog listed under: Favourite Reads on my blog (bottom of the sidebar).

My personal favourite adaptation is of Jane Eyre from 1996! I always wanted to read the classics, then see their adaptations but it didn't always work out that way! Laughs. I also *love!* The Secret Garden (1993), Little Women (1994), as well as A Little Princess as a classic film! I'd love to watch each version of *Pride and Prejudice* as its one book by Austen I have read and cherished! :)

*Bride and Prejudice was seriously wicked, by the way!

It's an on-going journey, for sure! Thanks for letting me know Anderson is in two adaptations I am interested in! :)
