Reading Update and LOTS of Plans!

Happy Monday! So January is shaping up to be a very busy reading month for me. In fact, I may have over-committed myself just a touch. Oh well! I'm gonna try to meet several goals...

  • Read Possession, by A.S. Byatt for book club
  • Read The Woman in White for #WilkieWinter discussion (won't finish 'til February, per discussion outline)
  • Finish Hunger by Knut Hamsun for International Reads
  • Finish The Diviners by Libba Bray, for Jazz Age January
  • Finish The Devil in Silver by Victor LaValle, a buddy read with Capricious Reader
That doesn't sound like a whole lot, except for the fact that most of the books are 400-500 pages long. Oops! Hunger is a short one at closer to 100 pages. We'll see how this shakes out.

This weekend, I put my focus on two books...

The Devil in Silver is a truly horrible and ridiculous cover. Ain't no #coverho love for this one. But when I first mentioned wanting to read more diversely in 2014, Heather suggested this one. It's an odd mix of literary thriller and...stuff...by an author of color. Huzzah! It's gotten some good critical attention (reviewed by Joe Hill in the NYTimes!), and so far I'm really enjoying it. I'm about 160 pages in of 400 pages. I will definitely finish it this week because it's a super fast read so far.

And The Woman in White is no big mystery. Well, it's no big mystery that I'm reading it. While I didn't officially sign up, I used the Classics Club Read-a-Thon this weekend as inspiration to dig into the book. I'm about 120 pages in so far, and I'm enjoying it, too.

This week is Bout of Books, so I'll be focusing my attentions on finishing up The Devil in Silver and starting Possession. I'll be steadily pacing myself through The Woman in White and writing discussion posts as I go along.

Wish me luck!

What did you read this weekend? What's on tap for the week?

Join in, why don't ya?

  1. That really is a strange cover - I'm glad the content is an improvement LOL

    1. Isn't it? I had my doubts, but the content is really good. And I'm thinking maybe that was an early cover? There's a black one with flame typography that seems to be more prevalent. Hmmm.

  2. After popping over to Goodreads, I realized that I had heard of The Devil in Silver before, but that cover totally threw me off. That is a bizarre cover choice.

    1. LOL, it is bizarre. I think the flame cover is more prominent. I have an ebook so at least no one sits around and sees me reading the "devil buffalo book" as Heather and I call it.

  3. It is early morning and my breakfast is totally reacting on that cover. This would be one of those covers that would make me feel a bit weird holding the book probably. I hope you will manage to keep up with all those books and enjoy them too. Good luck!

    1. LOL, I'm thankful I have an ebook copy so I'm not sitting around reading it in public. I'm afraid my child would be scared of it! Thanks, Ciska!

    1. Thanks, Ellie! I'm rereading the part I was already familiar with right now, but I didn't remember much. Will be moving into the "totally new to me" chapters shortly. :)

  5. This cold weather certainly makes it a good time for reading, I think. Enjoy all those big books, Andi.

    1. Thanks, Deb! I'm usually shy of the big books, though not as much as I used to be. I'm shucking off those mental restraints! :)

  6. Gah! That cover! I can't get over it.

Wow, you have a LOT of reading to do! At least the Devil Buffalo book is going quickly!

    1. Hahaha! Truly terrible. I do have a lot of reading to do, but Devil Buffalo is super fast, like you said, and The Diviners should be a quick one, too.

  7. I think I've overbooked myself a bit for January too! Good luck finishing all of the books on your list :)

  8. I want to know who's the idiot that thought that would be a good cover for Devil in Silver. I have a hardback copy and the cover is so different.I may be overextended for January too. There's the TBR Double Dare, New Year's Resolutions Challenge, and the L.A.R. Month with Nymeth and Iris. *sigh* Good luck with Bout of Books. It sounds like something we both need. :-)

  11. I hope you love The Diviners. I can't wait for the sequel... I actually got a book for Jazz Age month after you posted about it. I still haven't even looked at the actual blog hosting it. Must do that... And then read the book... I also plan to read Possession and The Woman in White. Plus, there is my graphic novels and Lucy Maud Montgomery... And all the series I would like to make a dent in... And reading challenges... hm...

  14. You do have quite the ambitious January lined up! I've never heard of The Devil in Silver so I look forward to your thoughts. I remember The Woman in White going very quickly once I got a 100 or so pages in. Happy Reading!! Oh, and I just got The Hunger in the mail today!

    1. I know. It makes me a little tired thinking about it. I hadn't heard of The Devil in Silver until Heatheroo brought it to my attention. Not sure how I missed it unless it was the gawd awful cover. Good to know re: Woman in White! It's good, but takes a little more brain power. I have Hunger waiting too! ALL THE BOOKS!

    1. It's really interesting so far. And I'm glad to know you enjoyed The Diviners! I haven't dug into that one yet. It's up next, with Possession. It'll be my next Nook book while I'm reading the physical copy of Possession. :)

  18. I got the ARC of The Devil in Silver (which I enjoyed) and had not seen the actual cover- it's HORRIBLE! I hope it doesn't deter people. Have you read Big Machine? I think it's actually better.

  19. I don't think I would have ever selected The Devil in Silver on my own until you mentioned it. That is one of the worst covers I've seen in a long time. Yikes! I hope the book is better than the cover!

You are going to love Woman in White. Definitely eerie and classic Wilkie Collins. Enjoy!
