Chop Chop! And Monday Reading!

This week has been...ugh. Just blargh.

  • David was out of town all week. It's become glaringly obvious that I am completely spoiled to having a husband at home who helps with ALL the things.
  • Work = busy.
  • I just haven't felt like reading for long stretches this week, but I have tested and started a few great books.

Ruby by Cynthia Bond is beautifully written. I can tell it's probably going to rip my heart out and stomp on it, but I'm diggin' it.

A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki is off to a good, quirky start.

Les Miserables by Victor Hugo is going much better since I downloaded the Modern Library translation. Readable!

Aside from taste-testing books, I got an itch to give my blog a new look. It's pretty flashy and over-the-top, but I'm feeling a wee bit over the top. See!

Yep. Got my hair chopped off. Hellooooo, pixie cut! Hi there, faux hawk!

And that's all. What's shakin' with you?

  1. Your hair and blog both look awesome :)
Good luck with Les Miserables! I read that edition and loved it until I was about 450 pages in, and then it was slow progress and by the end I was well & truly fed up of it!

    1. Thank you, Sam! I was afraid the blog look was "too much" but it's growing on me! What happened? Did you just get tired of reading it in general? I can see that. I did the same thing with The Count of Monte Cristo before I ditched it completely.

  2. LOVE the haircut. I've heard great things about the Ruth Ozeki, so I look forward to hearing how you like it!

    1. Awww, thanks, JoAnn! I'm always weird and indecisive about a blog design change. We'll see if this one "sticks."

  7. Definitely lovin' the hair! And I haven't felt like reading for long stretches, either. My attention span is just too all over the place!

  8. Love the hair and the blog! Sometimes you just need to mix it up a little, right? I committed (to self) to read Les Mis this year. I really need to start if I want to get that accomplished! I have the Penguin Clothbound edition trans by Denny.

    1. Thanks, Terri! Absolutely. I find myself going through these clothes/hair/reading/blogging stir-ups occasionally. They're liberating! Let me know when you start Les Mis! We can discuss as we go.

  9. I would love to get a pixie cut, but I don't know if I have the face and/or hair for it.

    1. I'm a short, overweight woman, so it was a controversial choice for me, but I love the cut so much I said damn everything else.

    2. It totally works, so maybe there's hope for me yet! I'm currently growing it for a wedding I'm in in August... maybe after that. But the other issue is that my hair is VERY thick... which is part of the reason I love keeping it short, but at the same time I'd be afraid it would just poof out on me.

  10. I have thought about starting Ruby... but boy, it seems like it has some heart-breaking sections. I read An Untamed State by Roxane Gay, which also has some tough-to-read scenes--but they were worth it! Still, I feel like I can only take one book dealing with that kind of violence per season. In the TBR pile, though--maybe for later in the year!

    1. Right? But the writing is just so GORGEOUS. I'm hoping that'll take the edge off. Or it might just make it more heartbreaking. We'll see. I've heard An Untamed State is ROUGH! But worth it.

  12. Love the hair! Summer is a great time to chop it off.

I've been through several Absent Attention Span weeks. Rereading Time and Again by Jack Finney, now, and I know I can't blame him for the fact that I keep falling asleep because I *love* Jack Finney.

    1. It is! I feel so much cooler and lighter. And I totally know what you mean. Last week I wasn't able to make myself leave work alone during lunch, so my reading motivation went out the window. Hoping to get back on track this week since I love the books I'm reading. It's SOOOO not their fault!

    1. Thank you! I'm sort of obsessed with it. Every day that I come out of the bathroom and it's styled slightly differently, my son jumps up and down and screams, "MOM, YOUR HAIR IS AWESOME." Nothing like a little self-esteem boost!

  20. Adore and covet your hair! I'd chop mine off in a minute if I didn't have such a big moon face.
My book group is discussing A Tale for the Time Being this month, but I haven't started it yet - better get a move on.

  30. I am TOTES JEALOUS of the hair!!! I have been wanting to take the plunge on a pixie for 3 years now, but my stylist recommended that I wait until my hair grows back (I got terrible postpartum hair loss with both boys...still waiting for the fallout from Tater Tot to end...le sigh). Once I've thickened up again I am totally using you as my inspiration to go for it! :)
