Nevertheless...
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon just has to be read this year. It HAS TO. It's one of Heather's faves, and Heather is always right. This will also be my first #EstellaProject book.
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline has been sitting on my TBR for over a year! I first met Trish at an Ernest Cline reading and signing, and I still haven't read it. Because I'm a deadbeat. Also a potential #EstellaProject book.
Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt was a book club pick, but I couldn't make it to the meeting the night they discussed. This will also be an #EstellaProject read!
A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry and Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides are both on my 2014 TBR Pile Challenge stack, and I really need to get on that.
John Saturnall's Feast by Lawrence Norfolk is a book I stumbled across when I saw LibrarianFanMail's review on BookTube. I can't wait for this historical fiction novel surrounding food.
Geek Love by Katherine Dunn sounds crazy. I bought it when I first started BookTubing, so almost a year ago? Yeah, it's still sitting. This one is my third pick for #EstellaProject, so I'm on it!
Les Miserables by Victor Hugo is a readalong with @BHoNeg and we meant to start in April. Yeah...
Finally, I'm going with two classics. It's just silly that I haven't read 1984 yet, and The Contract with God trilogy by Will Eisner is considered a seminal work of graphic narrative. I shall conquer!
What's on your pile for summer?
Goodluck reading Les Miserables! And Happy reading for the rest of the summer!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Melinda! It's slow going, but hopefully I can keep up a steady pace with Les Mis and finish it off. :)
DeleteMiddlesex! (insert flailing gif here) Something tells me you just might like that book, maybe a little.
ReplyDeleteLOL, if it makes you flail, I'm very very hopeful.
DeleteI'm with Shannon. If you read nothing else this summer, make it Middlesex. And A Fine Balance is a personal favorite of mine, but some people find it to be a tough read.
ReplyDeleteAwesome endorsement, Tanya! For Middlesex and A Fine Balance, too!
DeleteOoh such interesting titles! Ready Player One is amazeballs! ANd I so need to get to Tell the Wolves I'm Home too. Here's hoping you have a great summer and enjoy all the reads :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tanya Patrice! I just know I'm going to love Ready Player One and Tell the Wolves I'm Home. I just need MORE HOURS in the day to read! lol
Delete"It's one of Heather's faves, and Heather is always right." And don't forget it! LOL Kidding! Only maybe.
ReplyDeleteGood luck! I love the variety!
LOL, I just have to recognize that it's gospel truth and go with it. lol
DeleteYou've GOT to read Tell the Wolves I'm Home!!
ReplyDeleteYes I do!
DeleteOh my gosh, you have got to read Ready Player One! I want to read Tell the Wolves I'm Home as well.
ReplyDeleteGiven all the good endorsements of these two, I think I'll put 'em at the top of the list.
DeleteGreat list! I'm dying to read Tell The Wolves I'm Home and Ready Player One. I've heard great things about both of them! I felt a little guilty writing out mine for summer since I haven't actually come close to finishing my spring list but this time it will be better right?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Katherine! Me too! Those two seem to be the most popular so far. This time WILL be better! For both of us! I believe! lol
DeleteA Fine Balance and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay are both books I've been meaning to read for some time. I even own Kavalier and Clay. My Top Ten Tuesday list has a mix of fun reads and classics. I figure if I put it in writing, I might just read them!
ReplyDeleteMe too! Years and years, in fact. Looking forward to checking out your ten!
DeleteI want to read Kavalier and Clay again. I really liked it. Spoke to me of a bygone era and just well written. Les Mis. I know I won't finish it by summer's end but I need to get started. It's intimidating me and all my shorter, faster read books are jumping around waving their pages at me!
ReplyDeleteI love bygone era stories, too. Well written, awesome ones! The shorter, faster books always jump up and get in the way for me, too. I'm thinking I just need to devote a couple of weeks of intensity to Les Mis and see where it gets me. If it gets me hooked, even better!
DeleteThat cover of 1984 is BOSS. Also, good for you for reading some classics! YES.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it? I don't actually have that edition, but BOY, do I wish I did! Thanks! I have a whole Classics Club list I need to be working on, but I've been more attracted to more recent reads and diverse reading this year.
DeleteMiddlesex is on my TBR 2014 Pile as well :) Glad to see I'm not the only person in the world who hasn't read it yet!
ReplyDeleteYou are not alone! Definitely not.
DeleteOhhh wowza. You're reminding me of some great books that I've read and a bunch that I've always meant to. A Fine Balance is amazing, hope you dig it! 1984 is one of my SHAME books. I haven't read it and I feel SHAME.
ReplyDeleteYou have a great summer of reading ahead, yahoo!
1984 is an asswhip. I started reading it a couple of weeks ago, and the only reason I'll go back to it is to get it off my Classics Club list. lol
DeleteA Fine Balance and Middlesex are both in my top list of best books ever. I've had The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay on my TBR forever...maybe your review will inspire me?
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm so glad to hear that because they both intimidate me a bit. I hope my review inspires you to read Kav and Clay, because that would mean I loved it and I gushed! I hope for that. lol
DeleteOh my goodness! I haven't been on here for too long!!! Loving the look of the blog! and all these goodies you have on your TBR pile! and ps Middlesex has been on my TBR pile for longer than I'd like to admit, I better get to it! lol Again loving the look of the blog!
ReplyDeleteIs it Les Mis abridged or unabridged? The difference is probably at least 500 pages and TONS of French history! Lol
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteWow, what a wonderful TBR, looks like you are going to have a great Summer. I hope you Les Miserables unabridged because abridged doesn't count. Booksnobs will agree :P
ReplyDeleteI was totally just going to add to my reply that unabridged will get you forever bragging rights. Mine never gets old.
DeleteI actually love 1984. I know! Maybe because the first time I read it was in 1984. But I loved it a few years ago as a re-read, too. Also, Wolves and Middlesex are everything everyone has said AND MORE. And Geek Love is just a roller coaster ride of WTF awesomeness.
ReplyDeleteHa! I love the ones (dystopias) that I read in high school. I loved Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451 so much, I'm not sure there's room for 1984 in my heart. We'll see. And yes, you make me want to read all of these at once. Boom!
Delete1984 was my favorite book for years. I'll be curious to see what you think. I'm not sure whether it holds up. Also, yes to Middlesex and Kavalier and Clay. Many of the others have been languishing on my TBR for years as well.
ReplyDeleteOh cool! I was having such a hard time getting into it, but I'll endure. Glad you liked K&C and Middlesex, too!
DeleteHmmm...The Contract with God sounds very interesting. As for me, my summer TBR is...nothing. Yes, nothing. (Nothing.)
ReplyDeleteContract is supposed to be great. My old prof really loved it, so I'm hoping I do, too. YAYYYY nothing summer TBRs! That sounds liberating!
DeleteFAB list. Have fun. I'll be reading Kav and Clay with you - let me know when you start and we can tweet thoughts?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Care! I absolutely will. I suspect it'll be another couple of weeks. Need to finish off A Tale for the Time Being and then THE BOOK OF LIFE!
DeleteYour list has SO MUCH AWESOME on it! Love it!
ReplyDeleteWOOHOOOOOO!
DeleteIf you plan to read Ready Player One, I highly recommend listening to the audio. I listened after reading Trish's review and I'm glad I did since I doubt I would've enjoyed it half as much in the printed format.
ReplyDeleteYou are going to love Tell the Wolves I'm Home! It's your kind of book, trust me!
A Fine Balance and Middlesex. Yes, yes, yes! I can't believe you haven't read these. I think I read A Fine Balance back in our Yahoo group. It is such an amazing novel. Middlesex is outstanding, too.
You have picked some great books! I need to recap my spring reading goals and put together a new list for summer. Off the top of my head, I hope to read The Boys in the Boat, The Dog Stars and The Last Letter from Your Lover.
I would love to, but Greyson won't have it. LOL I've tried listening in the car on my way to/from work since it's about half an hour each way, and he says, "Mom, that's hurting my ears." Which just means he's not into it. lol I can't wait for Wolves, Middlesex, and A Fine Balance!
DeleteGood luck with your summer reading, Les!
The first three books on your list are amazing and I hope you enjoy them! I want to read the next three, but haven't and appreciate the reminder to keep them in mind. 1984 I read as a teenager and it scared me half to death. It was the late '70s and it all felt all too real.
ReplyDeleteThanks!!! I'm glad to know you enjoyed 'em. 1984 would've probably scared me to death if I'd read it when I was younger. Brave New World sure did!
DeleteLes Mis is actually really good, and that's coming from someone who was terrified to read it. The newer translation (by Julie Rose) is fantastic and I've heard it's better than older translation. I listened to the audio version of it, which was also great, and it helped me to get through the book without being too overwhelmed.
ReplyDeleteYES! I have the Julie Rose, and I'm loving it. So much better than the previous translation I tried.
DeleteTell the Wolves I'm Home is high on my list of books to read this summer, too!!
ReplyDeleteI've heard enough about Geek Love that I think I'd like to read it, but for some reason I keep forgetting to add it to my TBR list on Goodreads. Problem solved, though! ;) Great list!
ReplyDeleteHeather is definitely right about the Chabon! I love his work; even when the story doesn't entirely work for me, I can't help but be amazed by his writing.
