#ReadMyOwnDamnBooks 2017 Sign-Ups: Yelling From My TBR!

It's time again for #ReadMyOwnDamnBooks, a TBR reading effort. Why not a challenge? Because how many challenges bog us down? Not this one!
  • You make the rules
  • Be as hardcore (or not) as you want
  • We're a community to support you, not chastize you
Define your own damn goals or don't. Vow not to buy books, or whatever. This event is really that loosey goosey. You know your stacks and your challenge agility better than we do.
There will be a link-up here so you can share your progress posted on the final day of every month!

Personally, I'll be reading as many of my own TBR stacks as I can in 2017, mood permitting. I'm a moody reader, and I know that about myself, so I'll ultimately do whatever I can to KEEP reading.

I don't buy many books because I'm a cheapskate, so I'm not setting any particular goals in that department.

Ready to sign up? Here ya go!

Now, there are some specific titles yelling at me from my shelves, so I'll give you a quick run-down of my own damn books that I hope to read in the first quarter of the year or so. I'll probably read more than this, but these are the ones that stick out right this second.

Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward

The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss

On Such a Full Sea by Chang-Rae Lee

Princess Jellyfish #1 by Akiko Higashimura and Yuko K.

  1. I've put myself on a book buying ban for next year, (let's see how that goes!) and need to read more of my own damn books. I read 30 this year, which was pretty good... but I need to do more! My pile & bookcase is totally out of control.

  2. I so need this right now! I have overflowing shelves and no more room. Excited to see how easy or hard this is for me =)

  3. I am going to participate in this. I am also going to set a low goal, because I accept too many ARCs and want to read and review those better this year. My goal is going to be 12...and if I hit that before July, I'll double it. I have been awful at reading my own damn books!!! This fall alone I can think of 5 books I bought and just 1 I completed...seriously!!

  4. I've made a goal for myself to cut my TBR by about 20% in 2017, and that's about 80 books (assuming I don't add any more, which of course I will....). However, I can use DNF books towards that.

  6. I feel like I actually don't need to sign up for next year since I really changed my habits this year. Of course, if I find myself falling off the Own Books wagon, I will definitely set some goals. :)

  7. The other half in the household finally found my well hidden TBR pile (6 huge piles of books in the bedroom..) He made me realize that there are a lot of books (he did not see the TBR on my ereader) and I might have to start reading a few instead of collecting. Last year I read 8 books from the pile and added 15 more.. this year I am going to try and read 20 and not add more than go out. It is going to be a challenge!

  8. I gave up on the book buying ban thing, but I am going to be more discerning when I buy (I've started downloading samples of kindle books when they're more "sounds interesting" than Must Have That Now) and I'm going to stop gut-Holding when I see books I want to read on the New and On Order list at my library. So more books will come in, but more of my own books are going to move, too, I hope.

  9. I'm on board. I bought way too many books last year instead of reading all the ones sitting on my shelves. This year I will read my own damn books :) Thanks, I need this.

  12. I purged my book shelves this year when I moved, it was necessary, but painful. Still there are way too many books sitting not read yet. Starting out with The Innovators by Isaacson. Challenging myself to read what I have as well as what I need to read for work.

  14. Salvage the Bones is one of the most thoughtfully paced books I've ever read. The tension is unforgettable. I still think about it sometimes, she's magic, Jesmyn Ward.

  15. I joined a TBR challenged years ago until it quit, then I did Double DOg Dare TBR for 3 years and it stopped. I have managed to clear off all the stacked TBR books on top of my bookcase and even have a few holes on the shelves. I want to continue. Sometimes what I have on my shelves is even better than what I see out there! Joining this challenge. Will try to do one each month and if I am lucky two.

  17. I'm so glad you're doing this one again -- I really need to do it. I've got so many unread ebooks purchased because they were $1.99 -- I gotta start reading them before I forget that I even have them!

  18. Last year I read 11 of my own books, just under 20% of my total books read. For 2017 I'm aiming for 40% of the books I read to be my own. I think I can do it! Thanks for hosting this fun challenge again.
