Out of the House for Four Months and Monday Reading!

It's Monday! What are You Reading? is hosted by The Book Date

Another winter break is coming to a close, and I am not feeling these back to work vibes. For the last semester, I was online only. I taught classes for three universities, and it was GREAT to be home all the time. Alas, that also comes to an end with the end of winter break. I'll physically be on campuses Monday evenings, and with the earliest early birds on Tuesday/Thursday mornings and with significant commutes...for the next four'ish months. It's a total first world problem, basic complaint. I can't say that being online for this past semester was necessarily good for me. It increased my social anxiety a bit and made me even less willing than usual to leave the house, so the shift is proabably a good thing.

It's Bout of Books week! I blew through N.K. Jemisin's THE BROKEN KINGDOMS (Inheritance #2) this past week, and it was amaaaazing. I think I actually liked it better than the first book in the trilogy, and that doesn't happen for me very often. The characters felt much better developed in this one.

I'm also reading Angela Y. Davis's WOMEN, CULTURE, AND POLITICS and underlining like a fiend. I read one or two essays from it every evening, so I can really focus and dig into what she's writing and mull it over a bit before I move on. So, so good.

Finally, I started a romance novella for Bout of Books so I can feel my progress. At Janani's recommendation, I decided to try Rebekah Weatherspoon's romance novels. SO SWEET (SUGAR BABY #1) caught my eye first, so I'm rolling with it. The protagonist cracks me up, and so far it's a sweet, fun story. I'll most likely finish it here in just a bit.

Are you reading for Bout of Books? Whatcha got?

The next Drinks in the Library livestream will be Saturday, January 13 at 2pm Central, and we'll be discussing bookish bullet journaling! I hope you'll join us on Instagram Live

  1. YAY!!! Yay for so many things! I'm no huge fan of commuting (I do it, daily), but I'm glad that you now have an excuse to get out into the world for a bit; I think I would have a similar issue/struggle if I had the option to work from home for long periods of time. People...I would rather not. HAHAHA! I'm excited for the next Drinks in the Library; I'm going to do my best to be there!

    1. How long is your commute, Tara? One of mine is about 35 minutes and the other is about 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic. My commute USED to be over an hour and 10, which was the actual worst. People...I would rather not. BEST WAY TO PUT IT.

  2. I remember hearing Davis speak when I was in college. I need to look for that book.

    1. It's amazing, and pretty much makes me rage since so many of the issues are still the same since the Reagan era.

  3. Yayyyy for Rebekah Weatherspoon! I want to read a bunch more romance novels by her in this upcoming year, so I'm psyched to see other people enjoying her work. I read one novella by her and it was so sweet and dear.

    1. I was so tickled to find that most of her books (maybe all) are on Scribd! I'm already on to the second novella in this series. Good stuff!

    1. Thank you, Kelly! The night class last night was great. They're a feisty group, and it should be fun. I get to meet my morning classes next week. Yay!

  5. Two days out of the house isn't a bad reintroduction to society. I'm glad you won't be overwhelmed with a traditional schedule. It sounds like you needed the break.

I don't really understand Bout of Books, so I guess not. Maybe next year! (Although I will probably read a ton this week. I really need to spend more time offline.)

    1. True! It is a nice way to slide into a more normal schedule. I definitely needed the break.

Bout of Books is a week long readathon. So basically it just gives me an excuse to shuck off housework and read. lol

  6. I went to Cal Berkeley in the late 60s/early 70s. I remember reading/hearing about Angela Davis a whole bunch. I'm sure the book is interesting.

    1. It's definitely an interesting read. Most of what I've read so far are speeches from the 80s. The Reagan administration is making me retroactively angry.

  7. Hooray for leaving the house! I'm considering trying to find one more online gig so that I can be on campus less. I'm there 3-4 days per week, and I find that it's just mentally exhausting. All of my creative energy goes to my students, and by the time I come home, I'm spent. Which makes for a super crabby Jessie. I don't want that for my boys. I love teaching, especially developmental writing, but I just don't know how to balance it all and stay healthy.

    1. Oh gosh yes, the 3-4 days thing kills me. I'm loving this T/Th schedule in comparison, so hopefully it'll last a while. It is tough to balance all the things and still take care of ourselves. I hope you can find more online!

  8. Are you more of a morning person or a night person? I come in at 6am and I love it. No one gets here until like 9:30-10 so I have many hours to do my work and chill. I avoid all the traffic and find that my day goes a lot better because of it.

    1. My schedule is so funky and chopped up. I'm a morning person, but my T/Th classes start at 8am, so there's really no available space on campus for me that early (no office) and Greyson gets a little wonky if I'm not around to get him off to school. We'll see how it goes. I might have to adjust.

  9. I didn't read much more than usual during bout of books, so I'm hoping to be more into it next time. It sounds like you got some fun reading done! My book club is reading Jemisin's first book this month and I'm really glad of the push to pick it up :)
