Top Ten Books I Hope Santa Brings

I don't participate in Top Ten Tuesday regularly, but I always look forward to seeing my fellow bloggers' responses. When I saw this week's topic over at The Broke and the Bookish, I KNEW I had to jump into the fray. Tis the season to be wishlisting books! Here are 10 from my wishlist.

Zone One by Colson Whitehead
Because I'm all about a literary romp through a post-apocalyptic landscape.

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
Even though I know it's gonna tear me a proverbial emotional "new one."

State of Wonder by Ann Patchett
Because I need to make peace with at least ONE Patchett novel. I've had no luck with the others.

Graveminder by Melissa Marr
Even though there is potential for cheese here, but still want to try. It looks ridiculously fun and potentially creepy.

Lost on Planet China by J. Maarten Troost
Because I have enjoyed other Troost books including The Sex Lives of Cannibals and Getting Stoned with Savages.

Medium Raw by Anthony Bourdain
Because Tony is a kitchen god. An inflammatory, sensational, good-writery one.

There but for the by Ali Smith
Because Hotel World blew my socks right off and even though I didn't have luck with The Accidental.

Blue Nights by Joan Didion
Despite the  fact that it's going to make me cry like an idiot.
I Married You for Happiness by Lily Tuck
Because it sound freaking amazing and underappreciated. I need a literary underdog.

The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides
Because I haven't liked one solitary thing Eugenides has written to this point, but I'm a sucker for an academic novel.

  1. I hope Santa sees this post!

  2. I am shocked to admit that I'm kind of falling for Tony Bourdain.

Hope you get what you want for Christmas, Andiloo!

  3. Lots of good looking books! I hope you get at least some of them. :)

  4. Ladies, sadly, the truth of the matter is that I haven't actually shown this list to a soul, so if there are any books for me for Christmas it'll be gift card related. But I'm cool with that!!! This helped me organize my wants a bit! lol

  5. And Nancy, Tony is HAWT! For an ole blowhole.

  6. Great list! I need to add a few of these to my wishlist.

Here's my Top Ten Books I Hope Santa Brings.

  7. I'm interested in State of Wonder and Blue Nights, too. But, not interested enough to buy them for myself. ;) I hope you get them, though, as they're on your list. I hope you get all ten!

  8. Ooh some of the same books I want to read in the upcoming New Year are on your list. I read Zone One and A Monster Calls and they were pretty good, so I hope Santa sends those for you really soon :-)

  9. I'd just like to say: when is People magazine going to get their act together and vote Tony Bourdain "Sexiest Man Alive." RAWR.

Ahem. And yes also his books are great. :)

  10. I really hope you get A Monster Calls! It's wonderful.

  11. You can leave The Graveminder off your list--I read it last summer and it was a big letdown. :( However, Lost in Planet China is a standout and lots of fun. Hope you get every single one of these you really truly want.

  12. Santa doesn't bring me books :( I might actually be getting a giftcard this year though, so I am excited about the potential shopping that I can do! A lot of these are on my list too, or are books that I have read already, and I must say, you have fabulous taste! All of these are good ones!

  13. The Marriage Plot is on my Christmas list, I hope someone buys it for me :)

And I've heard so many good things about A Monster Calls.

  14. What a yummer list! State of Wonder is on my "Books Which Will Mysteriously Show Up Under the Tree" list, as possibly is "The Marriage Plot." Can't bear the Didion. I tried her "Year of Magical Thinking" when the loss of a best friend was too raw. Just rips me apart.

But the rest! Hope Santa's very good to you. :-)

  15. Looking forward to checking out your list, Deb!

Thanks, Bellezza! This list helped me organize my wants if I get a gift card! :)

Thanks, Tanya! I'm glad to hear Zone One and A Monster Calls were successful!

AMEN, JEN!!!! We should start a movement!

  16. Thanks, Trisha!!!! I'm still hesitant to read it, but I think I'll like it if I take the plunge.

Thanks for the tip, Tammy! I've read a mixed bag of reviews for Graveminder. It's definitely outside my norm! Love love love, Troost! I'm glad Lost on Planet China was a good one.

Thanks, Zibilee! Santa rarely brings me books either. Gift cards are a MUCH better bet.

Sam, both have gotten such good reviews I just have to have 'em!

Thanks, Lisa! I read The Year of Magical Thinking all in one day, but I also did not have a new lost to deal with. Enjoy your Christmas books!

  17. Great list. I've been working on The Marriage Plot but put it aside until the holidays were over because it required so much attention. Hope you receive some of these!

  18. Well the two I've read--and loved--(Patchett and Euginedes) are from authors who haven't worked for you, which makes me even more curious to hear your thoughts. There But For The and I Married You For Happiness are on my TBR too. I had trouble getting into Zone One, which is downright embarassing for a less-than-300-page novel, so I set it aside for now, but I hope to finish it before the end of the year. Hope Santa reads this note:-)!

  19. I have advised people to get at least three of those books for my mother, with the secret ulterior motive that once my mother has them I can steal them and read them while I'm home. :p

  20. Graveminder is fun. Not great...but fun.

We should do a buddy read of State of Wonder...if we both ever get the book. I PROMISE I won't race through it. Or even a sort of buddy listen of Bourdain. You can do Medium Raw and I'll do Kitchen Confidential. I'm a slow listener, really. :-D

  21. I haven't read most of these but I really enjoyed The Marriage Plot -- although I liked Eugenides' two earlier books also. His books all seem very different to me, so I hope you like this one better!

  22. I was going to say I want to read this and that one of your list... but really, I want to read all of the above except The Marriage Plot, and even that one I'm undecided on. I really, really want to read I Married You For Happiness. What a title!

  23. Great list! I hope Santa is good to you this year!

I've heard amazing things about A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness and I adored The Marriage Plot. I'm curious about I Married You for Happiness so I hope you get that one!

    Merry Christmas :)

  24. Yes, Medium Raw, I want that one too! I've never read Bourdain (which is ridiculous!)

  25. So interesting that you plan to read books by authors that you have *not* liked so far ("making peace with an Anne Patchett novel"). If I understand you correctly! I had never looked at it in that light--generally, if I don't like something, you cannot get me near anything else by the same author. Conversely, it has happened that I liked something so much (Byatt's Possession) that I'm afraid I'll be disappointed by the author's other work, and don't want to commit the time to trying it out. Weird, yes?

  26. Hey--why is there a typepad icon next to my name in my previous comment? I'm on blogger.

  27. State of Wonder was my first Patchett novel, and I thought it was nothing less than amazing.

Hope you have the same experience with it!

  28. The Troost book looks hilarious! I haven't read the first Didion memoir yet though I need to change that. I hope you get a gift card for Xmas so that you can get everything. Have a great holiday!

  29. i've heard really good things about when a monster calls. i have graveminder and the marriage plot at home as well. happy reading and merry christmas!

Thanks for taking the time to comment! Blogger has been a beast lately, so I hope you do not have any troubles leaving your thoughts.
