While I'm still tired from the Readathon, I think it might've shook my reading mojo loose from the latest slump. That seems to be the story of my life lately!
I managed to finish Bastard Out of Carolina last night, and I immediately fell into The House at the End of Hope Street.
These books are absolutely nothing alike, and that's probably why they're working so well for me back-to-back. As you might imagine, Bastard was totally heartwrenching and impeccably written. Hope Street, even though I'm not far in, seems like a British Sarah Addison Allen with all its lovely magic.
Are you suitably recovered today? Are you reading anything fab? I'm excited about the prospects of the books ahead of me since my reading always seems to kick up this time of year as we head into mid-spring and summer. Hopefully that holds true this year!

Bastard is a terrific book - most definitely heart wrenching! And, I've just started House, too! I am loving the book and loving how the house is a character in the story as well - its kind of creepy and kind of wonderful at the same time :)
ReplyDeleteIt was really really good. I didn't realize just how good until the ending. Just...wow. House is so lovely so far! I just wish I had more time to read over the last few days. I agree...creepy-wonderful!
DeleteI can't wait to hear your thoughts on Bastard Out of Carolina; it had such an impact on me when I read it way back when.
ReplyDeleteGirl, I can't wait to write a review. WHAT A BOOK.
DeleteI'm happy to read such good news! The read-a-thon effects on me were quite the opposite: I've got the book hangover of my life and I must finish a book (in French = easy since I'm French) for tomorrow but it seems that climbing Mt Everest will be easier...
ReplyDeleteI thank you again for all your dedication to this event: it was great and I can't imagine all the behind-the-scene work it has been.
I wish you a wonderful (reading) week!
Thanks, Flo! I hope you managed to finish the book you needed to read! We love this event very much, and I'm so glad it was a good experience for you!
DeleteI have had Bastard out of Carolina for years. I feel like I should read it, since I'm in Carolina (the North one anyway), but it sounds so heart wrenching! I just haven't talked myself into it. Hope Street sounds lovely though!
ReplyDeleteYa gotta read it. It was a really interesting experience for me since I knew families like Bone's when I was growing up. Not so dramatic, maybe, but stuck in a cycle of poverty and criminality that outsiders didn't understand. This book is insightful in myriad ways.
DeleteSounds like fun! Happy reading.
ReplyDeleteCheck out what we are reading this week.

Thank you!
DeleteI needed xtra sleep after the readathon too! but the howling wind kept me awake for hrs and now the rain has arrived.. probably a great setting for some reading =)
ReplyDeletethanks for all your effort and excellent organization of our 24 hr fun!
Oh no! That's terrible timing for the howling wind. I was hoping we'd see some rain, but nada. Thank you for being a part of the Readathon!
DeleteLove that your using our "Its Monday banner!"
ReplyDeleteHappy reading

I'm glad to know who made this one!!!! Sorry for the lack of credit.
DeleteI read Bastard out of Carolina sooo long ago and still remember it. Heart-wrenching and abnormally powerful. I'm reading All The Light We Cannot See today and loving it (comes out May 6th). Good luck recovering! Seems like taking a day off was a good idea! ~Kelly, ReadLately
ReplyDeleteAbnormally powerful is a great way to put it. That ending. OMG. The day off was a great idea. I need to remember that next time! lol
DeleteBoth my mojo AND my body is recovered post-Readathon, so I'm feeling pretty fab. Glad you could take a day after all that amazing work you did - it was such a great event!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're feeling fab! It was a pretty awesome event thanks to helpers like you, Shannon!
DeleteWas another great event! I hope the one in October is on a weekend that the boys are at their dad's. My reading mojo seems to have left the building. I can't find anything that grabs me right now. Hopefully that changes soon!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dana! I hope your reading mojo is picking back up!
DeleteThe House at the End of Hope Street sounds wonderful! You had me hooked at Sarah Addison Allen. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's awesome so far! I saw after I posted that that Addison Allen is blurbed on the front cover. Ha!
DeleteEnjoy your day off, I'm impressed that you're still reading after all that reading yesterday...
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised too!
DeleteSure was a fun Readathon! I'm glad you seem to be recovering from all of your activity to make it work so well for us. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYes it was. :D Glad you enjoyed it, Joy!
DeleteI read Bastard Out of Carolina in college and WHOA. Heartwrenching much? I haven't read House at the End of Hope Street, but it sounds whimsical and fun! Thanks for organizing the Readathon, you and Heather are THE BEST!
ReplyDeleteWHOA is right. One of the best endings I've ever read. Touching, if maddening. Hope Street is the shizzle so far.
DeleteGlad you had such a successful readathon! That's a great description of Hope Street, btw. Enjoy! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Monika! I can't wait to get further into Hope Street. :D
DeleteI'm recovered! I need to sit and write a book review...not sure I have the mojo for that one yet.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I have some reviews I need to write, too. That's a wonderful problem to have!
DeleteI am recovered! I think readathon always propels me into a good burst of reading. Thanks for all of your hard work - you are a rock star!
ReplyDeleteHaha, me too! Usually a good way to kick off the summer months for me. We'll see if my summer reading is as good as it was last year. I hope! And thank you!
DeleteI can't believe you're still reading after the readathon! I don't think I'll be attempting another readathon in the future. It's just not for me. But I'll definitely sign up to be a cheerleader and focus all my energy on cheering for everyone who's doing what I definitely cannot! :)
ReplyDeleteI can understand that, but I'm so glad you'll still cheer and interact!
DeleteThanks again for the event!! I have not heard of Bastard but now I want to read that! I am recovered today (monday) but Sunday was a different story :D
ReplyDeleteYou're so welcome! It's a GREAT book! I got motivated to read it because of a couple of BookTubers who really loved it.
DeleteGlad to see you're recovering nicely! As hard as you and Heather work, it would seem that it would take so much time to recover from one read-a-thon that by the time you were it would be time to start preparing for the next. But then you two are made of heartier stuff than I. :) Thanks again, Andi! You and Heather are just too awesome for words!
ReplyDeleteAnd you know, that's one of the bazillions of things I always love about Dewey's read-a-thon...it always kicks my reading mojo back into high gear. :)
Thank you, Debi! Three cheers for community and reading mojo!
DeleteYay for your reading mojo being back!! And, thank you for another amazing readathon! I'm so bummed that I couldn't participate more than I did. I guess there is always October!
ReplyDeleteThanks for putting that awesome readathon together! I love the look of The House at the End of Hope Street.
ReplyDeleteGood that the readathon kicked in your reading mojo. I need something to kick me back into reading mode but I can't do a readathon.
ReplyDeleteIt will come back.
Have a great day.
