While I'm still tired from the Readathon, I think it might've shook my reading mojo loose from the latest slump. That seems to be the story of my life lately!
I managed to finish Bastard Out of Carolina last night, and I immediately fell into The House at the End of Hope Street.
These books are absolutely nothing alike, and that's probably why they're working so well for me back-to-back. As you might imagine, Bastard was totally heartwrenching and impeccably written. Hope Street, even though I'm not far in, seems like a British Sarah Addison Allen with all its lovely magic.
Are you suitably recovered today? Are you reading anything fab? I'm excited about the prospects of the books ahead of me since my reading always seems to kick up this time of year as we head into mid-spring and summer. Hopefully that holds true this year!

Bastard is a terrific book - most definitely heart wrenching! And, I've just started House, too! I am loving the book and loving how the house is a character in the story as well - its kind of creepy and kind of wonderful at the same time :)
ReplyDeleteIt was really really good. I didn't realize just how good until the ending. Just...wow. House is so lovely so far! I just wish I had more time to read over the last few days. I agree...creepy-wonderful!

DeleteI'm happy to read such good news! The read-a-thon effects on me were quite the opposite: I've got the book hangover of my life and I must finish a book (in French = easy since I'm French) for tomorrow but it seems that climbing Mt Everest will be easier...

DeleteI have had Bastard out of Carolina for years. I feel like I should read it, since I'm in Carolina (the North one anyway), but it sounds so heart wrenching! I just haven't talked myself into it. Hope Street sounds lovely though!
ReplyDeleteYa gotta read it. It was a really interesting experience for me since I knew families like Bone's when I was growing up. Not so dramatic, maybe, but stuck in a cycle of poverty and criminality that outsiders didn't understand. This book is insightful in myriad ways.

DeleteI read Bastard out of Carolina sooo long ago and still remember it. Heart-wrenching and abnormally powerful. I'm reading All The Light We Cannot See today and loving it (comes out May 6th). Good luck recovering! Seems like taking a day off was a good idea! ~Kelly, ReadLately

DeleteI can't believe you're still reading after the readathon! I don't think I'll be attempting another readathon in the future. It's just not for me. But I'll definitely sign up to be a cheerleader and focus all my energy on cheering for everyone who's doing what I definitely cannot! :)
