"Waking up to the election results was like looking down to find thousands of cracks in a floor that, seconds ago, I'd thought solid and smooth. Every day since election day, I wake up an angrier, more radical activist, forced to see the floor for what it was this whole time. "
--Sarah Michael Hollenbeck from the essay "As Long as It's Healthy" in Nasty Women: Feminism, Resistance, and Revolution in Tru*p's America edited by Samhita Mukhopadhyay and Kate Harding
If you read any essay this year, let it be this one. While this is my favorite line, the issues of most importance here are her discussions of living with Moebius syndrome, ableism, and the deeply personal decisions associated with making a family.

I just put this on my TBR list. Thanks for the recommendation and great quote.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy it as much as I did, Jane! It's a great essay and a great collection so far.
ReplyDeleteGosh, I just looked up Moebius syndrome. I assume it is her child who has it. What people cope with. Scary.
ReplyDeleteActually, the author and her sister both have Moebius syndrome. It factored heavily into her decision whether or not to have her own children. It was a really enlightening read all the way around.
DeleteI don't remember seeing this one but it's going on my list!
ReplyDeleteHuzzah! I hope you enjoy it!
DeleteBoy, do I feel that. Every nicer version of what I wanted the world to be was proved wrong on election day -- even knowing that ID laws and gerrymandering played a major role, I was just so disappointed in people who chose this.
ReplyDeleteRight? And I feel that sense of every day being a more radical activist. I cannot stop. And yes, so disappointed that people chose this. I knew it was a distinct possibility, but that didn't help.
DeleteVery relatable quote! Definitely going on my to-read list :)
ReplyDeleteThis looks like such a great book! I look forward to hearing more about it.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a great book. I just added it to my to-read list!
